  1. How does the geography of Swat Valley influence the development of mankind?

The Swat Valley in Pakistan is surrounded by mountains. For years (even centuries) this type of geography isolated a civilization or community and lead to a more traditional life style among the people who live there. One example would be the country of Greece. In Greece, the mountains caused isolation among societies and forced the creation of individual city states. This type of geographical situation slows the development of mankind because it hinders the sharing of ideas and technologies. These societies are more traditional as a result. In the book, I Am Malala, Malala gives examples of this, “We didn’t have good science labs, computers or libraries. All we had was a teacher with a white board standing in front of the students and their textbooks” (xv). However, Malala points out examples in which her isolated community in the Swat Valley is part of a modern world. When talking about her best friend Moniba, Malala states, “We’d lived on the same street when we were little and been friends since we were toddlers and we shared everything, Justin Bieber songs and Twilight movies” (7). This surprised me. To be so isolated that they have no access to modern educational tools, yet be connected to the world just enough to know Justin Bieber and Twilight. This demonstrate that technology does impact even the most isolated of areas, but why doesn’t it impact it in a way that changes and evolves mankind, such as in the area of education?

  5. The swat valley is surrounded by mountain ranges and the Arabian sea, this can protect them from possible invaders because they will have to use all of their energy to try to get through the mountains and will then have a hard time taking over. Having these mountains surrounding them also isolated the civilization creating a traditional lifestyle.

    1. Although this is a fair summary, you still need to answer the question: How could you relate this information to the roles or economic situation in the Swat Valley?
