  1. In chapter 5 malala says Pashtuns don't say thank you because to there culture thank you isn't good enough to them so you repay them by giving them a gift. Also when she was little and she took a spelling contest she came in second place so she stole another little girls play phone because she was jealous. When she grew up more she had to get that respect back from her father and she joined a speaker contest to gain that respect back from her father. When she joined she came in second place but didnt get revenge this time because she was proud that she scam in second place.

  2. in chapter five it talks about Malaya being thankful for her culture. like there was a girl in her class that had a beautiful name and which that means queen of light and she wanted to be Pakistanis first female army chief, Malaya had a talk it was like slang like city talk, and not like the others in the poor town. she said that her cousins would make fun of her because she doesn't like to go bare foot she has a slang and she has store bought clothes. Malaya didn't like the fact that pashtns never said thank you she often thought that it was weird. the next thing that happened in the chapter 5 was Malaya joined into a spelling contest to make her father proud she came in second place she felt a little bad but she was still proud that she ended up in a good place, 2nd place.

  3. In chapter 5 Malala talks about the ways and culture of the pashtun people. Pashtuns don't say thank you unlike people in america. And she also says how they never forgive or forget. She also goes through experiences that she has learned from. when malala was younger she stole from a childhood friend. Those experiences can help her later in life.

  5. in chapter 5 Malala speaks of her culture. In the pashtun culture people dont say please or thank you because they'd rather have a gift then kind words. Actions speak louder then words in their culture. they never forgive or forget. in her younger years of childhood she stole from a friend. she got upset about the girl that won the spelling bee. Malala got second place. she got jelous and stole the girls play phone that looked like Malalas. Malala learns from her mistakes and values those life lessons. Samantha S.

  6. In the autobiography "I am Malala", Malala is considered "modern" by her friends and family. This is probably because of how different the thoughts and actions of the Pashtun people are to her beliefs, based on how she perceives American culture. For instance, on page 73, she says "Kindness can only be repaid with kindness. It can't be repaid with expressions thank you and then forgotten". This demonstrates the Pastun people's way of life of never forgive nor forget, as compared to the American perspective of acknowledgement, then disposal. This book shows the massive difference between American and Pashtun beliefs.

  7. In chapter 5, Malala says that the Pashtun people don't say thank you when someone gives them a gift. Instead, you give the person a gift back because a simple "thank you" doesn't mean anything to them. When she was little, she did a spelling contest and came in 2nd place. She was jealous of the girl that was in 1st place so she stole the girls play phone to get revenge. When she got older, she got into a speaking contest. She came in 2nd place, but to earn her respect back, she didn't get mad. She was happy that she was close to 1st.
